Ultrasonic Level Transmitter Working Principle

Ultrasonic level meter working principle:

Ultrasonic waves propagate in gas, liquid and solid with a certain propagation speed. When propagating in the medium, ultrasonic waves will be absorbed and attenuated. The attenuation in gas is the largest. The attenuation in solid is the smallest.

Ultrasonic waves will reflect and refract when passing through the interface of two different media. For interfaces with large differences in acoustic impedance, it is almost total reflection.

The time interval from transmitting ultrasonic waves to receiving the transmitted signal is related to the position of the interface. Ultrasonic level meters use this characteristic of ultrasonic waves to measure the level.

The transmitter and receiver of ultrasonic level meters can be installed at the bottom or the top of the container. The transmitted ultrasonic waves are emitted at the interface and received by the receiver. By measuring the time interval from the transmission to the reception of ultrasonic waves, the height of the object can be measured.

As shown in the figure below: The speed of sound in the medium is c. The time difference between the echo and the transmitted pulse is t. Then, according to the formula D=c×t/2, the distance D between the sensor and the surface of the object is calculated.

F is the measuring range (full tank distance). L is the material level. BD is the measurement blind area. D is the distance from the sensor housing plane to the liquid surface (or material surface).
